We recently stumbled upon and digitized a delightful little tome about traveling our great state called Summering in Colorado. Published in 1878, just two years after Colorado's entry into the Union, this book is a travelogue about various regions in and around Colorado. Summering in Colorado is indicative of books of this ilk that were very popular in the mid to late 19th century. The writer of this particular guidebook, Charles Harrington, stages his exposé in a first-person perspective as part of a group of horizon-focused travelers who begin with a fortnight in Denver, which, at the time was a bustling city of around 20,000. This adventurous group then proceeds to travel from Ouray to Pike's Peak to Boulder Canyon and beyond. The end of the book is dedicated to a week spent among the Ute people in Southern Colorado. Fun fact alert: the book's publisher, Richards & Co., was a prominent bookstore once located at 327 Larimer Street, presently the site of Campus Village apartments on Auraria campus.
