We recently stumbled upon and digitized the first volume in a series of plate collections featuring examples of Gothic architecture. This series, entitled Examples of Gothic Architecture: selected from various ancient edifices in England, was collected in 1838 by renowned English architect and historian, August Welby Pugin alongside his father, Auguste Pugin. Among other things, the younger Pugin was famous for helping revive the Gothic Revival movement in the mid-19th century and was responsible for the interior design of Westminster Palace in London. He was also a well-known lover of all things medieval and often advocated for a return to medieval architecture and social life as a way to curb poverty. The 170 plates in this book are from a 1920 reprint by the publisher and J.R. Jansen of Cleveland, Ohio. Hopefully we'll digitize the subsequent volumes, but for now, please enjoy this stunning collection of English Gothic architecture.
