Want to try something different for your holiday menus? Check out Feeding America, a cookbook digitization project from Michigan State University Libraries.
The project, begun in 2001, has nearly 100 digitized historic American cookbooks from 1798 to 1922. Notable samples include Favorite Dishes, a souvenir cookbook compiled by the Board of Lady Managers from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, The Ideal Bartender 1917, penned by Tom Bullock three years before Prohibition, and Fannie Farmer’s original Boston Cooking School Cookbook, 1896. The project is accompanied by a helpful glossary of terms and an alphabetical online exhibit of antique cooking tools. Browse cookbooks by date or areas of interest, such as ethnic influences, dietary qualities (vegetarian, etc.) and American regions. Visitors can also search the entire collection by title, author, ingredients, or recipes, such as “roast turkey” or “thanksgiving”. Learn more about the project with this video tour.
Enjoy and Bon Appétit!
