As classrooms stay remote across the Auraria Campus, faculty and instructors are looking for new ways to transform their in-person courses into captivating online experiences— and Auraria Library is here to help.

Auraria Campus students, faculty, and staff have free access to more than 32,000 streaming videos with a wide variety of subject areas including government, news, literature, music, art, experimental films, psychology, documentaries, entertainment and more. 

“Streaming video is especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most people are doing their best to remain in a safe state of hunker,” said Rick Simons, a video specialist at Auraria Library, “There’s no need to go to the library to access a video. Once you know how, a video of your choice is just a click away.”

Why Use Streaming Video in Your (Virtual) Classroom 

 

With the remote classroom limiting the opportunity for hands-on or in-person experiential learning, diversifying the online experience with streaming video in the virtual classroom can help fill the gap.

"The digital film and video databases of the Auraria library are a fantastic resource,” said Rachel E. Harding, PhD, associate professor of Indigenous Spiritual Traditions at the University of Colorado Denver, “I regularly use documentaries and independent feature films as supplementary texts in my classes. Our library has an impressive range of titles that are easily accessible to students via streaming platforms.  The films are a joy to explore and very helpful to my teaching."

Introducing streaming video into your classroom also helps raise awareness amongst your students to also access these videos for their research, assignments, and even personal entertainment. Not only do streaming videos add new elements to your classroom but they also open doors for students to explore outside the classroom while practicing social distancing and staying home. 

In addition to using the streaming videos accessed through Auraria Library, our librarians curated a list of publicly available video resources in our Open Online Video Collections. These streaming video providers might be more recognizable to your students with popular websites like YouTube, TED Talks, and Edutopia.

Faculty and instructors can easily assign a streaming video for their lesson by linking to them on their Canvas, Blackboard, or D2L platforms; easily creating convincing and engaging visual results for scholarly presentations.

“It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words,” said Auraria Library Researcher Support Librarian Orlando Archibeque, “Being a visually-oriented learner myself, I have long been a strong supporter of libraries providing access to streaming video services which provide to our Auraria learning community the opportunity to integrate into our teaching/learning a diversity of thought/opinion on a wide variety of topics.”

The Auraria Library’s 32,000+ streaming videos are organized into 23 different collections for easier search and browsing of titles. 

 

Search for Specific Streaming Videos

Visit Auraria Library homepage’s “Start My Research” feature and search for your specific streaming video title or topic. Be sure to click the “Media Only” button to return only media results and not other materials.

Make sure to use the Technical Tips tab to find, watch, and maximize the capabilities of these collections to your advantage. A lot of the collections feature interactive transcripts that run parallel with the video, so you can conduct a word search and find a smaller segment of the video to fit with the topic of your assignment.

On the Auraria Library home page, research guides might also contain streaming videos. They just might provide the right visual for your academic project. Database lists can also reference streaming media. Wherever these indicators appear, it is a good idea to explore them as a way to find things that will bring more life to your educational experience.
