Special and Digital Collections Unit
The latest addition to Auraria Library Digital Collections is The Hispanic Link Weekly Report. Originally published in 1983 and running for almost 30 years, the Hispanic Link Weekly Report was a product of the Hispanic Link News Service, which was co-founded in 1980 in Washington, D.C. by journalists and activists Sebastiania Mendoza Ericksen and Charlie Ericksen. The Service syndicated thousands of articles over its 33-year run to hundreds of newspapers in the United States and Latin America. These articles, written by high school students, amateur and professional journalists, prison inmates, and immigrant smugglers, were, for a quarter-century, some of the most widely circulated voices of America's Latinx peoples. This syndication service gave birth to the Hispanic Link Weekly Report, which we proudly have digitized and made available to the general public. In addition to being a weekly report on the condition, triumphs, and challenges of America's Latinx peoples, the Report also served as a training ground for young Latinx journalists, many of whom went on to work for such outlets as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Washington Post. While our collection is certainly not complete, we are working with the founders to acquire missing issues and serve as their digital archives.
